We spoke to KAL member Caroline Thorpe and asked her to share her fitness journey with us. We think it is a story a lot of our members can relate to;
"I wasn't the best at sport at school, and was made to feel useless at it, so consequently hated all sport and exercise and avoided it all my life. I had constant weight issues, but at the age of 39, I lost 3 stone on Slimming World and decided to take up running, something I used to do anything to get out of at school. I totally got the bug, started doing parkrun, joined Acre Street Runners, made loads of friends and my life drastically changed for the better. I turned into a race addict and ran distances up to half marathons, when I couldn’t run to the end of the street a few years ago. But then in late 2018 I got injured and couldn't run. Determined not to lose my fitness I joined KAL. It was the best thing I could have ever done. I tried loads of classes, but quickly decided that Daniels BODYCOMBAT and Jades BODYATTACK were my favourites. I also enjoy swimming on occasions, and it's a great way to cool off after an energetic class. I was back running within a few months, but am so glad that I got injured, because I'd have never tried the classes if not. I love the variety and I never get endorphins from running like I do from the classes.
Sadly, in August 2019 my marriage broke down, and the classes became even more important to me. There were days that I didn’t want to get up, but the thought of how good I would feel after a class always got me out of bed. As soon as I hear the music, even when I'm at the lockers before the class starts, I feel instantly uplifted. I always come away feeling absolutely amazing, and that feeling continues all day.
I have also lost weight and toned up loads since I started the classes, which I needed to do, as I'd slipped back into bad habits. My running has also improved by combining it with the classes.
I'm completely addicted to keeping fit now, and I can't imagine life without it. KAL and inspiring Les Mills instructors like Daniel and Jade have played a huge part in this.
In classes Daniel often uses the phrase 'Say goodbye to the ghost you see in the mirror' and I can completely relate to this knowing how much of a different person I am now."
