James Senior's story
I can remember the first time I walked into a group fitness class four years ago. I’d never been the most confident person but here I was at Bodypump. It was a big deal for me, I was really nervous.
I was immediately made welcome by the instructor and fellow participants. My abilities, or lack thereof, weren’t an issue and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. As the weeks and months went on my confidence increased along with the weights on the bar, I made a lot of good friends in my instructors and fellow “pumpers”.
In December 2015 my mum passed away after a brave battle with cancer. It was the worst time of my life, but I truly believe that one of the things that has helped me through this was my classes, and my newly found gym family. I can’t put a high enough value on having somewhere to go, if only for a couple of hours a week where I could focus on something positive and not have to think about anything else. It helped my strength both physically and mentally.
If I could say one thing to anyone who, like me was apprehensive about starting this journey, it would be 100% go for it. You can achieve more than you could possibly imagine. I would never have thought I would be able to deadlift 160 kg (so far).
For me it’s always been about feeling stronger on the inside as much as the outside.
